#21 - Top of 2013

Hagbard - Rise of the Sea King (Soundage Productions)

Welcome again, once more, to the beginning of another Top List. This is the first entry of the top list for 2013, and once again we revert back to a list of the top 21 albums for this year.
We begin by exploring the 2013 debut by Brazilian Power/Folk metallers, Hagbard. The band succeeds in combining epic, symphonic and acoustic elements with folk metal inspired by a host of different mythologies. The band took its name from the eponymous Norse sea god and their music is indeed worthy of that name! The album has a range of songs with the atmosphere ranging from epic choirs of male voices in "Let Us Bring Something for Bards to Sing" and "March to Glory" to Igor Rhein's growling vocals in "Sail to War", and from slow-paced songs with violins, flutes and guitars in "Mystical Land" and "Hidden Tears" (with guest female vocals by Vitória Vasconcelos) to the blasting epic sounds of "Dethroned Tyrant". Hagbard's debut album is a little gem in a sea of mediocrity and probably one of the best folk metal debuts of this decade! The band recently released their second album, which will soon be available here, along with their butt-kicking debut!

91/100
